The city of Mequon can give itself a pat on the back, as the results of its 2025 community-wide survey reveal that nearly all of the residents rated Mequon as an “excellent” or “good” place to live and raise a family.
In May, ETC Institute sent all Mequon households either a paper copy of the survey if their residence were selected to be a part of the random statistical sample, or a postcard with a QR Code to take the survey online. The survey, which contained 24 questions, sought input on a variety of topics, including community attributes, development, parks & open space, and satisfaction with city services.
The city’s previous surveys were held in 1998, 2005, 2012 and 2019.
“The goal was to receive at least 400 completed surveys. This goal was far exceeded, with a total of 705 households responding to the survey,” according to ETC’s report presented to city officials. “The results for the random sample of 705 households have a 95% level of confidence with a precision of at least +/- 3.7%. An additional 1,135 non-random residents completed the online survey.”
Ninety-six percent of the residents — excluding “don’t know” responses — were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with their quality of life in Mequon, while 94% were satisfied with their perception of public safety and 91% were satisfied with the city’s reputation. Eighty-three percent were satisfied with Mequon’s overall appearance.
City services — excluding “don’t know” responses — that had the highest levels of satisfaction were election services/voter registration (94%), police response times (93%), overall quality of fire/EMS services (91%), fire/EMS response times (91%), park cleanliness and upkeep (90%), overall quality of police services (90%) and overall City Hall customer service (88%), according to the report.
Eighty-three percent of the residents — excluding “don’t know” responses — are “very supportive” or “supportive” of commercial development of casual dining restaurants in the Port Washington Corridor between Highland Road and County Line Road, as well as other types of commercial development such as retail of special goods and supplies (66%), outdoor entertainment/recreation Venues (64%), indoor entertainment/ recreation venues (62%), retail of general goods and supplies (57%), childcare facilities (53%), and personal services (49%).
As for customer service (excluding “don’t know” responses), the reports notes that of those who had contacted city government with a question, problem or complaint during the past year, 84% were “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the courteousness of response, 85% were “satisfied” with the ease of access in a timely manner, and 72% were pleased with how well their issue was handled.
Other areas tackled were amenities for a new community pool, sources of information and overall value of the parks, which 76% of the residents surveyed indicated they are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the overall value their household receives from Mequon’s parks. Twenty two percent are neutral and only 2% are dissatisfied.
Residents were also asked their opinions on the community spending more money to make roads safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, with more than two-thirds in support.
“… making the community more bike friendly for the vast majority of residents that live off of Mequon road,” one resident commented. “It’s hard with kids to be able to bike to the town corridor and the interurban trail from our home.”
